BG2 is dying

Alright, time for something serious. As many of you know, BG2 has been around for a long ass time, I think about 10 years if you include open alpha. Not unlike other games, people lose interest as time passes and so the player base shrinks and shrinks. However, unlike other mods where no one plays them anymore (There are too many to name unfortunately) or other mods where the player base grows more and more toxic as time passes (R&L), BG2 has kept up a decently sized and fairly friendly player base until recently. This mod is dying, people have stopped playing because they never downloaded 2.2.3 and regiments are dissolving. If more people do not start playing, we will be the only regiment left. My friends, we need to keep this mod alive at all costs, it means a lot to many of us and we cannot sit here and watch it die. If it dies no longer will we have line battles, no longer can I torture you with my music and antics, no longer will we fuck up drills, and no longer will we be able to capture flags. We will not be able to protect our homeland or try to suppress a revolution. If this mod dies, we will only be able to look at an empty server select screen and wonder what could have been. We will think, "What could I have done to keep this mod going?" Gentlemen, the time to act is now. Taking action ASAP is crucial to the existence of this mod. We need to get people playing or getting back into Battlegrounds 2. I hope some of you take this to heart and join me, we need to save this mod. Not for me, not for you, but for all of us.

Yeah this mod has been dying for 3 years. I mean yeah, there are far less players than ever before but there are still people. Regiments like the 29th are adamant to stay alive (although it can be argued that the 29th did kill the game). Even if it meant that the only person left in the 29th was Karpik, I am pretty sure he would be stubborn enough to setup his own server and play Townguard alone with bots whilst shouting at them for not capturing the flags.

Battlegrounds 2 isn't a bad game, it's got a good community (where everyone knows everyone) and it has a "co-operative" dev team. However, the development progress for the mod is very slow. What can you expect if the devs aren't getting any money out of it except for a few pennies made from server costs ect. Slow progress is the biggest problem Bg2 faces. With few updates, not much is added to the game which results in people getting bored who then leave and uninstall the game. Yes, they are transferring Bg2 to Source SDK 2013 from the 2007 version but the thing is, during that time, many other "similar" games have been released with far better graphics, larger player base and so on. One example would be Mount and Blade Napoleonic Wars. When that DLC was released for Mount and Blade, a huge chunk of the bg2 player base moved on. It's only ever going to get worse when more games such as "War of Rights" are released.

Therefore, if you want this game to become more popular again, you will have to massively improve gameplay, graphics and physics. Especially graphics these days. You wouldn't believe out of the people I asked to get this game, most of them turned it down because of the "older looking" graphics. Without even trying it, they had the impression that the game would be shit just because of the graphics. To be honest, I can't really blame them.
Furthermore, you would need to advertise the game more. Whether it means that you get a popular youtuber to show it off or you get the game Greenlit on Steam. Either way, it will cost money or a lot of time.

And as we've all been aware of since the 2 2.3 patch, many people have struggled to get the mod installed. I bet there would be far more people playing if the download wasn't so confusing for new players.

However, all of these ways to improving the game are easier said than done.

Yes, graphics aren't everything. There are games with good graphics that suck ass and games with horrible graphics that are great. However, I've found it hard to make things out in BG2 at times, better graphics would definitely enhance the game play. However, the devs should be careful not to make it too different from what we have now because they'd lost older players. I remember a famous YouTuber played R&L when it was dying and hundreds of people picked the game up and revived it (It's dying again though, mostly because of a horrible player base). It isn't the devs fault BG2 is dying, they're doing all they can but they're lacking funds as you stated. We could set up a go fund me campaign for them or something, I have money I can spare. I'll play the game with or without real players, I like it a lot. 2.2.3 isn't hard to install, it's just that it's hard without instructions. It took me a month to figure out.
